Celebrity Baby Names: Volume II
Baby-naming is on our minds here at The Mom Crowd this week: it’s time for another round of celebrity baby names! About a year ago, I posted on this topic, and now I can’t help but be curious any time a celebrity has a child. What will their name be? Will it be “normal” or totally wacky? Here’s what I’ve found for 2008:
- Nouns are still a trend for first and middle names. Jessica Alba named her little girl Honor. Nicole Kidman’s new daughter is Sunday Rose. Mary Lynn Rajskub (“24″) named her son Valentine. Chris Noth’s son is Orion.
- Naming the kids after places is becoming popular. Gwen Stefani’s new son is named Zuma Nesta Rock – Zuma is the name of a favorite beach in California. Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz went even nuttier with Bronx Mowgli. I’m sure the more we hear about it, the more normal it will seem. I just hope we don’t start seeing Manhattan Ariel or Long Island Simba on a list anytime soon.
- Confusion is the key! Lots of celebribabies will have plenty of awkward introductions in their futures when they spout out their mouthful of monikers: Jerry O’Connell & Rebecca Romijn named their twin girls Charlie Tamara Tulip and Dolly Rebecca Rose. (Not only do you have to keep those flowers straight, you have to remember that Charlie is a girl.) Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck decided to name their second daughter Seraphina Rose Elizabeth. And Lisa Bonet clearly wins this category with Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, her son’s new name.
- As thrice displayed, Rose makes a lovely middle name.
- Pretty and classic are still around! Yay for Max (Christina Aguilera and J. Lo), Levi (Matthew McConaughey), Thomas David (Jack Black), Luke (Natalie Morales), and Stella (Tori Spelling)!
My favorites from this year are Emme (J. Lo & Marc Anthony’s daughter) – though I can’t figure out how to say it still, is it “Emmmm” or “Emmy”? – and Vivienne Marcheline (Brangelina). I love the way those beautiful long French names roll off the tongue.
What are your favorite celebrity baby names from this past year? Biggest head-scratcher? Are you now more or less likely to choose Rose as a middle name?

I actually like “Seraphina”. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of that name. But, yeah, 2 middle names is a bit much.
In England it is traditional to give a son two middle names. Since our sons have a lot of English/British background we decided to follow the tradition. It is a mouthful but we like the way it sounds.
Some of the celebrity names are not names I would have chosen (definitely outside the box)–but I can’t help but think that when they look at their little sweet-faced baby they think it is the perfect name–just like we do when we look at our own babies.
I’m curious if Lisa Bonet’s new baby is part Hawaiian? I thought last two names looked Hawaiian.
I almost chose Rose as a middle name for my last baby.
I really love Vivienne, but I think Valentine is a little interesting..and for a boy!
“I just hope we don’t start seeing Manhattan Ariel or Long Island Simba on a list anytime soon.” haaha! Yeah, Bronx Mowgli is a little whack.
One of the baby names on our list is a Place name. I am not sure if we will use it. We’ll see.
I agree that some of these names do start to become more normal the more you hear them and get used to them. Although, I don’t expect to be naming a boy, Pilot Inspektor.
Our daughter name is a place. Actually it is the city where my MIL lives, she suggested the name and we loved it! It was the ONLY name my husband and I agreed on!
My husbands family has a tradition that the first born boy initials BJ. Needless to day I am so happy we had a girl for that reason and I am still trying to talk my husband out of this horrible tradition. He is the first born son and wants to keep it going. Wish me luck when we have our second that I can change his mind.
day = say
sorry
I think Honor is the classiest.
One of my coworkers (a beautiful 17 year old) was named Ariel because of the Disney movie. I’ve grown accustomed to it, but I’m sure she’s tired of being compared to an animated character.
Okay so after all this talk of baby naming, I started to grow concerned that may have seriously harmed my 16 month old daughter by naming her Morgan. Then I see that another Morgan commented to this blog (see above)!!!
So Morgan, do you like your name? My husband and I loved the name from the time we married and never really even considered other girl names because we liked it so much.
I know Amanda, it’s one of those unisex names you dislike I’m just not into girly names (I won’t give examples for fear of offending someone .
I was hanging out with a sixth grader this evening and she randomly complained about her middle name – Rose! – saying it sounded like an old lady’s name. Just thought I should point out her opinion.
I like “Rose” as a middle name! Of course, maybe I’m partial b/c that’s what my middle name is it is a little old-fashioned, but hey, it’s a middle name, who cares? No one calls me “Sharon Rose” anymore — I only got called that when I was in trouble w/ my parents.
One of my friends has named her kids after occupations (Carter and Mason); I’m not sure if that was intentional, but I’m pulling for something like Taylor or Rider (Ryder?) for their third one.
