Meet Liza Hunter-Galvan
McKenna and I had an opportunity to meet Liza Hunter-Galvan this weekend at our local 5K race. Liza is 36, a mother of four, and will be representing New Zealand in the 2008 Olympics in the marathon.
Liza was quick to point out her kids to us while we were chatting with her. During the 5K race I saw her complete the course and then run the course backwards to cheer on her daughters. You could tell that she is very proud of her kids. What we didn’t know when we spoke with Liza is that her daughter, Amber, gives her an incredible inspiration to run. Amber was severely injured when the family was involved in a car crash and she can not remember a lot of the past. According the news story Liza is hoping that the her participation in the 2008 Olympics will trigger Amber’s memories of her competing in the 2004 Olympics.

What an emotional and inspiring story!
There are so many emotions that came over me while watching that news broadcast, but more than anything I’m inspired.
Makes me want to go out and run. I can’t wait to cheer Liza on in the Olympics, while saying many prayers for Ambers memory to return.
She is very inspiring! It was so wonderful meeting her and talking with her. I had a hard time forming my thoughts during that interview because I was still coming down from running the 5K…her running ability blows my mind! I ran a leg with one of her daughters. She has a beautiful family and seems like an amazing mom!
What a touching story. I can just feel the pain, and the hope.
It’s so nice to see Mrs. Galvan again!!! I remember going to see Amber in the hospital after the crash and I’m really excited to see Mrs. Galvan happy and healthy and ready to run again!!! I looked her up on the New Zealand Olympic Team and was SOOOO excited to see her!!!! GOOD LUCK!!! My mom and whole family will be cheering for you and looking for your family in the sidelines!!!!
She was actually my 7th grade science teacher.
I remember hearing about the accident; and her being gone for the rest of the year.
It’s good to hear that her daughter is doing much better.
Hopefully she regains lots of memories.
