Half-Marathon: I Finished and Lived to Tell About It!
Last week I shared with you how I prepared myself for a 13.1 mile race. Then, I did it! Here are a few things that caught me by surprise:
- I wasn’t anywhere near as nervous as I expected to be.
- I was literally the last person running for the entire first mile (slowest starter).
- Overall, it was easier than I expected it to be. Oh trust me, it was still hard, but it was manageable.
I wrote a detailed post with more specifics on my personal blog, so I’ll link you to that, if you desire to know more. Thanks for sharing in this experience with me, and if you participate in something like a half marathon, a 5 or 10K, or any other major athletic triumph, be sure to let us know in the comments. Accomplishing a major physical goal is something to be so proud of! Have a great weekend, all!

Congrats! That is a big deal.
Congratulations!
Since you asked, I participate in the local MS Ride each summer, which is a 150 mile bicycle ride supporting the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
I’d rather bike than run.
That’s awesome Dawn, congratulations! Do you plan to compete in another 1/2 marathon in the future?
Congratulations! I just ran my first marathon on October 19. I loved it and definitely plan to run another one. But I’ll probably try to limit the marathons to once a year. It is a lot of training. I’m also planning to run a 5K early on Thanksgiving morning with my mom! If you can believe it she just decided to take up running this year and this will be her very first 5K!
To everyone, thanks for your congratulations!!
Jon, did I read that right? 150 miles? That’s awesome. I’m thinking I’d love to get a bike and start cycling for a change of pace… I was awful envious of bikers as they’d pass me while I was training.
Heidi, I have no plans to do another one anytime soon. (I’ll be good if I just get out and run AT ALL in the next few weeks. It’s getting colder, and now that the big day is past, I haven’t been getting out to run.) It does indeed take a lot of time, as Katie mentioned.
Katie, Congrats to you as well. It is a huge accomplishment. And to hear that your mom has taken up running just reinforces the point that anyone can do something new if they put their mind to it. Our family is going to do a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot (fun run/walk for 1 mile)- which is what I hope to keep doing for my kids: setting an example and exercising with them. It’s like I was on the Biggest Loser or something and came home and decided the whole family needed to change. Just joking. But yeah, I think that’ll be a fun thing to do before we hit the table for a massive meal. I think I’ll continue on with 5 & 10 ks at this point.
Dawn, I am just getting caught up on my commenting…but WAY TO GO!!!!!! I am so proud of you!! You’re my hero!
[...] McKenna ran a 5K (3.1 miles) first and she then encouraged Dawn to run her first 5K. Then Dawn took it to the next level and ran a half marathon (13.1 miles). Here is how she prepared her for her first half marathon and her results. [...]
